Why Adult Day Centers?
There IS something you can do… Families facing the challenge of caring for someone with a chronic physical condition or dementia-related illness often feel helpless, but studies show that participating in programs like Benevilla’s Adult Day Centers may actually slow or reverse the decline. Social interaction continued physical activity and mental stimulation are integral to successful aging. Benevilla Adult Day Center Programs are carefully designed and implemented by our professional caring staff in order to maximize the well-being of your loved one. Ultimately, our Adult Day Center Programs provide peace of mind and an affordable way to keep your loved one right where they most want to be – in their homes and with their families. What is an Adult Day Care Program? The Benevilla Adult Day Center Programs are designed with both caregivers and their loved ones in mind. Our centers provide a planned program of activities designed to enrich the lives of our participants by building upon their skills, knowledge and unique abilities and strengths. For the participant, Adult Day Center Programs allow your loved one to enjoy their day while receiving the care and support they need. The benefits to your loved one include:
But as our participants will tell you, it’s not a “program”. Their particular Day Center is “their place” or “their club” or “their hang-out”. Our Philosophy: Put the Person First Our dedicated, caring staff makes the difference. We work tirelessly to provide an environment our participants enjoy and want to return to time after time to see their friends and to do the things they love. The key is our philosophy of “person-directed care”. Each individual’s personal independence is supported by providing choices of what to do, when to do it and in helping them set social, physical and emotional goals suitable for their particular situation. By offering choices throughout the day, we continually reinforce the dignity of each individual and allow them to fully participate in creating his or her own experiences. By engaging with each person as an individual – by acknowledging the richness of their personal life and treasuring their contribution to the life of our centers – we build a vital layer of caring into your family’s situation. Adult Day Centers Help the Whole Family For the caregiver, Adult Day Centers provides peace of mind. You know you have provided the resources and personal care your loved one needs to be their best while also receiving the care and personal support you need to refuel and continue to give your family your very best. We know that caring for an adult with dementia or who needs support for other reasons is a partnership between the health care provider, the family and the center staff. We will work with you to coordinate care and lessen your worries. That way, you can spend your time enjoying just being with your loved one instead of managing their health. Participating in a Benevilla Adult Day Centers Program may mean that your loved one can stay right where they most want to be – in their homes and with their families. Who May Benefit from Adult Day Care? Studies have shown that participating in Adult Day Centers Programs slows or reverses many of the effects of aging-related ailments so benefits are not restricted to any one group of individuals. The most common concerns which bring participants to an Adult Day Program include:
Physical Impairments Our person-centered focus allows us to be sensitive to any physical impairment your family member may have and to work within their needs to make the most of each day. Each of our centers is manned by trained staff and volunteers who are always there to help participants in ambulating and moving through any activities they engage in throughout the day. Activities are adapted for specific physical challenges so no one ever feels left out – especially during the always-popular volleyball games. The Benevilla Adult Day Care Programs in Sun City and Sun City West offer optional dedicated restorative care therapies and have a licensed physical therapist on staff to provide weekly treatment while restorative care aides provide daily assistance with exercises. Memory Impairments Two of our centers specialize in Memory Care: Mary’s Place in Sun City and Lucy Anne’s Place just south of Sun City West in Surprise. Both provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment for those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Lucy Anne’s Place offers care for those in the early to middle stages of dementia-related illnesses and offers an optional intergenerational program which provides daily intentional activities between the participants of the program and the children from Wirtzie’s Child Development Center. Studies have shown that interaction between the generations benefits both and that older adults who regularly spend time with children, are more optimistic, take better care of themselves, and have been shown to have longer attention spans. Mary’s Place is the only facility in the State of Arizona that specializes in providing day services for individuals living in the advanced stages of dementia-related illnesses. The focus of the program is identifying the strengths that each participant possesses and working with them to make the most of those opportunities – which ultimately assists them in preserving their memory. If you believe your loved one would benefit from either program, one of our intake specialists can provide more information about which program may be best for your situation. Isolation, Loneliness and Depression Many older adults develop depression as a result of isolation and loneliness. The structured activities and social interaction of each of the Benevilla Adult Day Care Programs help ease those feelings of isolation while still respecting the needs of your family member. Through individual activities, small group interaction and special interest groups, your family member will develop friendships and rediscover their interests at a pace that is comfortable for them. Purposeful Activities The Benevilla Adult Day Care Program staff plan a variety of activities each day with input and ideas from our participants. Some activities are just plain fun while many are designed to reach a participant’s social, physical or nursing goals. In every case, the participant is given the choice to participate or not. Activities may include:
Specialty Programs Programs are available to address particular concerns, including the needs of adults who have Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases, those who need physical therapy or restorative care and adults with developmental disabilities. Qualified, Compassionate Staff Benevilla Adult Day Care Programs are run by committed staffers who are passionate about caring for adults who need support. Each Center is led by a Day Care Program Supervisor with primary assistance from the Staff Nurse and Activities Therapists. Care partners and volunteer staff round out the group of people eager to make your loved one’s day an invigorating one. Top-Notch Nursing Care While your loved one enjoys their day, our center nurses provide the care and monitoring they need on a regular basis. Each Benevilla Day Care Program has a Registered Nurse on staff to provide nursing services, including medication administration, regular monitoring of weight and vitals, care for chronic conditions such as diabetes and many other services requested by the primary physician. Personal Care with Dignity Our commitment to honoring each individual’s dignity extends to treating some of your loved one’s most challenging issues with care and consideration. If your family member is wheelchair bound, our staff is trained to be available when they need assistance. If your loved one needs help with toileting or bathing, we have specially trained staff to assist them, and bathing areas and laundry facilities designed to allow them to maintain their privacy and dignity as much as possible. Delicious Meals & Snacks Gathering over a meal is a time-honored way to build relationships and strengthen the body so we pay close attention to providing fantastic fare. Lunch and snacks at Benevilla Adult Day Centers are catered by the professional kitchen at Birt’s Bistro on the main campus in Surprise and reviewed by our Registered Dietician. Executive Chef Jeffrey Amperse bases his daily menus on fresh, local ingredients – including the occasional contribution from the Intergenerational Garden shared by Lucy Anne’s Place and Wirtzie’s Child Development Center. Special diets may be easily accommodated and assistance at mealtime is always available. Thoughtful Facility Design Each Benevilla Adult Day Care Program has a unique personality but all share the warmth and attention to designing a space which serves the goals of the participants. Multiple spaces are carved out enabling your loved one to choose whether to participate in a group activity, socialize with a small group over a game of cards in another space or sit quietly in a third. Each Center offers a safe, secure courtyard area allowing participants to enjoy the outdoors and a home-style kitchen for those who enjoy baking. Bathrooms and nurses offices provide needed privacy and each facility has a washer and dryer to maintain your loved one’s dignity if the need arises. Flexibility Our centers are open weekdays and provide full and part-time options for care. Insurance or governmental reimbursement may be available. Friendly, Convenient Transportation Our centers can provide door-to-door transportation in one of our comfortable buses for a nominal fee. Our friendly, courteous drivers will provide assistance for your loved one as needed. Nationally Accredited All five of our adult day programs are accredited through CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities). Our programs exceed the expectations of the Department of Health Services and maintain best practices in the field of adult day care.
