Marcia is a typical Benevilla volunteer – passionate about the time she spends volunteering at Benevilla, and self-effacing about the time she spends doing it. As Marcia says, “I really don’t understand why you’d want to hear from me – I’m just a volunteer.”
A recent transplant from Florida, Marcia is used to filling her time. She worked two jobs – one part time, one full time – in Jacksonville, and still managed to volunteer 25 hours a week. When she started looking into a move to Arizona, she did her research about volunteer opportunities and found Benevilla.
“I called up and talked to a very nice lady,” says Marcia. “We had a long talk on the phone, and I told her what I’d been doing. She told me ‘when you get here, don’t go into your house. Just leave your bags there, come over here, and start volunteering!’”
After her move, Marcia looked for Benevilla and applied to become a volunteer. Since her arrival she has been a grocery shopper, a friendly visitor, a phone pal, a transportation driver, and runs vital errands. Her passion is Mary’s Place where she is an Activity Care Partner.
“The staff at Mary’s Place is wonderful. They are so incredible. They do a terrific job.”
She freely admits that finding her passion in volunteering surprised her. “People who knew me years ago would never know that this is me, because I wouldn’t have done this, I wouldn’t have had the patience for it. [Now] it just draws me.”
