Keith Johnson of Sankofa/Island Magic is leading a series of drumming classes at Benevilla programs throughout the West Valley.
Benevilla’s Life Enrichment Programs meet specific daytime care needs including memory care, physical rehabilitation, and intellectual and developmental disabilities. The programs offer an affordable way for members to regain and maintain independence while caregivers receive the resources they need to energize themselves.
“Music is important to our members in so many ways,” said Joanne Thomson, vice president of program operations. “For example, one of our members at Mary’s Place, our Life Enrichment Program in Sun City for those with late stage Alzheimer’s & dementia, hasn’t been responsive to other activities. However, as soon as she heard Keith and the members playing, her face lit up and she started drumming. That’s the power – and therapy – of music.”
The drumming program is supported in part by the Arizona Commission on the Arts, which receives support from the State of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts.
